Older patch panels often use ST ports, while modern switches and SFP modules use LC. This single-mode hybrid cord connects the two without any adapters. It pairs a small LC/UPC connector on one end with a twist-lock ST/UPC connector on the other. The OS2 9/125 µm fiber is bend-insensitive (G.657.A1), so it keeps signal loss low even when the cord is routed through tight cable managers. A 2.0 mm duplex zipcord carries both transmit and receive. Its yellow riser-rated (OFNR) jacket marks it as single-mode and meets code for general indoor and vertical runs. It's a practical bridge for campuses upgrading switches one closet at a time.

Two Connector Generations in One Cord

ST connectors were the standard on campus and industrial fiber for years. Many of those panels are still in service today. The equipment plugged into them has moved on to LC-based SFP and SFP+ ports. This cord lets you connect new switches to old panels without re-terminating the panel or stacking adapters that add loss.

How Each End Connects

The LC end uses a push-pull latch and a 1.25 mm ferrule, so it fits dense switch faceplates. The ST end has a 2.5 mm ferrule and a bayonet coupling. You push it in and give it a quarter turn to lock it. That twist-lock grip holds firmly in panels that see vibration or frequent bumps.

Bend-Insensitive Single-Mode Fiber

G.657.A1 fiber handles tighter bends than standard single-mode glass. It's rated for a 10 mm minimum bend radius and stays fully compatible with regular G.652.D fiber in your backbone. Patch fields rarely give cords perfect routing, so this extra tolerance helps a lot in crowded racks.

Long Reach on OS2

Single-mode fiber has a 9 µm core and carries light with very little loss. With the right optics, the link can stretch for kilometers. Short patch lengths add almost nothing to your loss budget, which leaves margin for the backbone run itself.

UPC Polish and Riser Jacket

Both ends use a UPC polish, the standard flat-contact finish for most single-mode data gear. The OFNR jacket meets riser fire ratings for vertical shafts and general indoor spaces. For ceilings or floors that carry return air, choose a plenum-rated cord instead.

Good Practice

Clean the LC and ST end faces before every connection. Check which leg carries transmit, and swap legs at one end if the link doesn't come up.

Common Places It's Used

University campuses often terminated their first single-mode runs on ST panels decades ago. Industrial control rooms and older telecom bays did the same. As those sites install new LC-based switches, this cord becomes a daily workhorse. It lets IT teams move to modern hardware while the long fiber runs between buildings stay untouched.
