OM4 Laser-Optimized Multimode Glass
OM4 is 50/125 µm multimode fiber built for 850 nm VCSEL transceivers. It has an effective modal bandwidth of 4,700 MHz·km, more than double that of OM3. Under IEEE 802.3, it carries 10GBASE-SR up to 400 meters, 40GBASE-SR4 up to 150 meters, and 100GBASE-SR4 up to 100 meters. That headroom lets this pigtail serve today's 10G links and tomorrow's 25G and 100G upgrades.
Semi-Tight Buffer for Faster Splicing
A semi-tight buffer leaves a microscopic gap between the 900 µm buffer and the 250 µm coated fiber. The gap can't be seen at 100x magnification, and there's no gel or powder inside. Its real benefit shows up at the splice tray. At least 10 cm of buffer comes off in one clean cut, compared with several short passes on a fully tight buffer.
Full 12-Color Sequence
The twelve fibers follow the TIA-598 order: blue, orange, green, brown, slate, white, red, black, yellow, violet, rose, and aqua. That matches the color sequence inside a standard 12-fiber cable. Each strand maps to its matching cable fiber at first glance.
SC/UPC Connector Details
The SC connector uses a 2.5 mm ceramic ferrule in a square push-pull housing. Its UPC end face is polished flat with a slight dome for tight core-to-core contact. Multimode UPC connectors are typically beige, while single-mode UPC connectors are blue.
How It Fits a 10G Channel
In a typical build, the pigtail is spliced to an OM4 trunk, plugged into an SC adapter panel, and patched to the switch with an SC-to-LC cord. IEEE allows 2.9 dB of total channel loss for 10GBASE-SR on a 400-meter OM4 link. Factory-polished connectors and low-loss fusion splices keep most real-world channels comfortably inside that limit.
