A Single-Fiber Fix
A cracked ferrule or a broken connector doesn't mean re-terminating a whole cable. Cut back the damaged fiber, strip, cleave, and fusion splice this pigtail in its place. The rest of the cable keeps running while you work.
Aqua Color Code
Under TIA-598, aqua marks laser-optimized 50 µm multimode fiber. It tells anyone in the rack that this pigtail belongs on an OM3 or OM4 link. Orange marks older 62.5 µm fiber, and yellow marks single-mode.
OM3 Specs
OM3 delivers 2,000 MHz·km of effective modal bandwidth at 850 nm. It supports 10GBASE-SR up to 300 meters and 25GBASE-SR up to 70 meters. Maximum cabled attenuation under TIA-568 is 3.5 dB/km at 850 nm and 1.5 dB/km at 1300 nm.
Tight Buffer Protection
The 900 µm buffer is fused firmly to the coated fiber. That makes the strand stiffer and better at resisting kinks during handling. Strip it in short sections to avoid stressing the glass.
Checking the Repair
Before closing the enclosure, shine a visual fault locator through the fiber to confirm continuity. Then measure loss with a light source and power meter at 850 nm. Compare the result with the link's original test record.
Building a Repair Kit
A good fiber repair kit includes simplex pigtails in each fiber type, heat-shrink sleeves, a precision cleaver, strippers, alcohol wipes, and a visual fault locator. With those on hand, most single-fiber faults can be fixed in one visit.
