The six fibers follow the first half of the TIA-598 color code, which makes it easy to match each strand to its cable fiber. OM4 laser-optimized glass supports 10G, 40G, and 100G short-reach optics. OM4 Bandwidth
OM4 fiber has an effective modal bandwidth of 4,700 MHz·km at 850 nm. IEEE 802.3 rates it for 10GBASE-SR up to 400 meters and 100GBASE-SR4 up to 100 meters. It also handles 25GBASE-SR up to 100 meters. Maximum cabled attenuation under TIA-568 is 3.5 dB/km at 850 nm.
Tight Buffer Strength
The tight 900 µm buffer is bonded directly to the coated fiber. It adds stiffness and crush resistance, which helps when fibers route through panels with sharp edges or tight cable paths. Remove it in small 1.5 to 2 cm bites using a precision three-hole stripper.
SC/UPC Connector
The SC connector features a 2.5 mm ceramic ferrule and a square push-pull body. It snaps in and pulls out without twisting. The UPC end face has a slight dome that keeps cores in firm physical contact. TIA-568 allows a mated pair up to 0.75 dB, and factory-polished connectors usually come in well below that.
Ready for Higher Speeds
OM4 works with more than just 10G. Duplex BiDi optics can carry 40G up to about 150 meters over a single OM4 fiber pair. 100GBASE-SR1.2 reaches about 100 meters over the same pair. Terminating with OM4 today keeps those upgrade paths open without touching the backbone.
